Campaign Vision & Goal

To enable and inspire independence as we age.
York Foundation Inc. — on behalf of York Care Centre — will endeavor to raise $2.5 million to transform care for the aging in Atlantic Canada and beyond.

In doing so, we embrace the Province of New Brunswick’s drive towards self-sufficiency by transforming aging care to allow more people to do for themselves, increasing their ability to effectively contribute and grow as valued citizens.

This will primarily be achieved through the creation of the Atlantic Institute on Aging (AIA).

Five realities about aging care in the 21st century

Residential care is increasingly complex and demanding. The medical needs of residents and the requirements of the community rise continuously, requiring perpetual advancement by every person and profession involved in providing care.

Care for the aging can be improved through research. Across North America and Europe, research that benefits the aging is rising as a priority, because it yields results that benefit the elderly, their caregivers, and whole communities.

Much can be accomplished through some fundamental changes in approach that help people stay with family or even in their own homes.

A demographic tsunami of aging Canadians is sweeping towards the health care system. Governments cannot possibly “build enough beds” to meet the need. Without new avenues and channels to support and care for the aging, the system will be overwhelmed — and standards of care and service will plummet.

Our community has enormous capacity to support and care for the aging, and conduct original research. Unlocking that capacity calls for sustained collaboration among the elderly, their caregivers, educators, professionals, and government.

Look into the face of an aging loved one.
See the vulnerability that each of us will experience.

Recognize their hunger for a signal that they matter.
Share their struggle to preserve a sense of dignity and worth.

Measure how precarious they are poised between independence and dependence. And consider that modest help can have far-reaching benefits.
